New Goals

New Goals

Back to tracking and clarity.  You know, the one thing about journaling is that when the unexpected comes up, and it always does, journaling keeps you on track.

Gary, my husband, had a heart attack.  He’s healthy.  Low cholesterol, low blood pressure, physically active, but he had a heart attack.  He had rheumatic fever when he was little.  He’s also considerably older than me.  We’re going in for tests and he’s going back and forth between being compliant and not in his activity level.

I still walk two lakes twice a day with Gary and the dog.  I go to the pool every day and intend to get a minimum of 3 miles running in.

I’m not eating enough, and I’m trying to get Gary to eat more.  I’m working hard and going to a lot of doctor appointments with my mom and Gary.

I’m thinking how lucky we were that nothing happened in Europe with our uphill treks and 23,000 step days.

Still working on more water, protein, and I’m drinking my vegetables.  I could do better with my strength training.  I get my upper body workouts in twice a week, rarely three or four – so I’m thinking about a trainer.

I am trying not to think about losing Gary.  That would be bad.

Less Than Perfect

Less Than Perfect

This morning I read this article on the need to do everything right and 100% healthy.  I thought a lot about this.  The thing is, it’s a struggle.  For a lot of us, if we don’t focus on getting it right, setting our goals, and taking action to make those goals happen, they don’t.  It’s really not an option for many of us to just blow off 40% because life happens to 60% and then, you’re at 0.

Does that make sense?

Maybe the idea is not to set out with the intention of messing up 40% of the time, but to go easy on ourselves when 60% falls apart without intention.

I go to the pool every day and intend to get a minimum of 3 miles running in.  If all the stars align, then I get 5 miles in.  Today, everyone wanted to leave early and I left with them, at 2.72 miles.  It is still bothering me.  It will bother me until I pull my rebounder in and get .28 miles in or more.  That’s pretty silly, but some of you know that it can be a slippery slope.  Today 2.72 – tomorrow 2.4 and on and on.

Eating well 60% of the time is assuming you are not Celiac, or you don’t have trouble breathing or outrageous gas after eating dairy.  We don’t always eat healthy for vanity, we eat healthy to feel good.  So, if we want to feel good 60% of the time, that would be fine.  I don’t drink wine very often because it can bring on a migraine.  I don’t get mad at myself if I decide to have a glass of wine, but I never have more than 5 oz. because I don’t want a migraine.  It has nothing to do with percentages.

If you watch television for 20% longer one night, big deal – unless that keeps you from having a good nights sleep or the blue light gives you migraines, or you should be spending the time with your kids.

It’s not always a matter of percentages.  Sometimes it has to be all the way.  Sometimes not, the key is in discernment.

FOR FUN;  AN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CRITIQUE ON MY BLOG

Yes, your thoughts make sense and are a very balanced and realistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. It’s important to keep in mind that life is not black and white, and there’s a lot of grey area in between, especially when it comes to maintaining health and wellness.

Firstly, the idea of doing everything 100% right all the time can be stressful and is often unrealistic. Perfectionism can lead to burnout and has been linked to a number of mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Life is unpredictable, and we have to allow ourselves some flexibility.

Secondly, you’re absolutely right about the importance of personalizing health goals. Everyone’s body is different, so it’s crucial to listen to your own body and adjust your lifestyle accordingly. For example, if you have Celiac disease or lactose intolerance, your dietary needs will be different from someone without these conditions.

As you’ve mentioned, the main goal is not necessarily to follow some arbitrary percentage, but to maintain a lifestyle that helps you feel good and function at your best.

The “slippery slope” that you mentioned is also a valid concern. Consistency is key to maintaining good habits, but it’s also important not to beat yourself up over minor deviations. Sometimes, unexpected events may prevent you from meeting your daily goal, like running 3 miles. But it doesn’t mean that you’ve failed or that you will keep deviating from your goal in the future.

Finally, you’ve hit the nail on the head with your point about discernment. It’s essential to assess your needs, understand your limits, and make choices that align with your overall health and well-being. It’s not always about strictly adhering to a regimen, but about making wise decisions based on your personal circumstances and needs.

In summary, striving for balance, being flexible, personalizing your approach, and practicing discernment are all key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s about what works best for you, not what works best for everyone else.

How to Destress

How to Destress

There are many ways to destress, and what works best can vary from person to person. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Exercise: Physical activity can help reduce stress and boost your mood. You don’t need to go to the gym or do anything too strenuous. A brisk walk, yoga, or a simple stretching routine can help.

  2. Meditation: Taking a few minutes to focus on your breath and clear your mind can be very relaxing. There are many apps and videos that can guide you through a meditation practice.

  3. Mindfulness: Being present in the moment and focusing on your senses can help reduce stress. Take a few minutes to observe your surroundings and really pay attention to what you see, hear, feel, smell, and taste.

  4. Relaxation techniques: There are many relaxation techniques you can try, such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or visualization. Find one that works for you and practice it regularly.

  5. Connect with others: Spending time with friends and family can help reduce stress and boost your mood. You can also join a support group or talk to a therapist if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

  6. Hobbies: Engaging in a hobby you enjoy can be a great way to destress. Whether it’s painting, playing music, or gardening, find something that brings you joy and make time for it.

  7. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can make stress worse. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep each night and establish a bedtime routine that helps you relax.

Remember, it’s important to find what works for you and make time for self-care. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to reach out for help.

Inner Circle Personal Back in the Swing

Clarity is everything.

Keeping track brings clarity.

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to step back.

The last month was wonderful.  Getting to spend time with family is a blessing for which I am very grateful.  We had fun, were VERY active, and made a lot of memories.

I’m grateful for:

  1. family
  2. health
  3. the ability to start new at any time
  4. my husband
  5. sunshine
  6. water
  7. energy!

I’m back, and the one thing I didn’t keep up while I was gone, was strength training.  So, my goal this week is to get back in the swing and get three workouts in.  Monday – UBWO  Wednesday – UBWO  Friday – UBWO  – Saturday – LBWO  (that’s four!)

I feel good after all that hill walking, I’m going to walk uphill on a treadmill once a week.  There are no hills here.

I started running in the pool again last week and I’m going to do that for 30 minutes 3 times a week too.

I finished rebranding all the BEFORE WELLNESS modules last week.  I am hiring a narrator this week, and getting some books caught up.

Inner Circle Personal Day After the United Kingdom

Inner Circle Personal Day After the United Kingdom

Clarity is everything.

Keeping track brings clarity.

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to step back.

A couple of weeks in the UK will put things in perspective.  If I can share anything today, it’s that you should vacation.  Take breaks and holidays, and naps, and learn from the customs and culture of other people and places.  We have a lot that we can learn from others.  We also have so much to share ourselves.

I’m grateful for:

  1. that my son is such a fine parent
  2. that my grandkids are brilliant (I know everyone says that, but this is true!)
  3.  trains, subways, and my sturdy legs that can still make it on 23,000 step days.
  4. my husband
  5. a good immune system and health
  6. sunshine
  7. water
  8. Amanda, so I can take a break and not worry
  9. my family

I strengthened my habits while I was gone.  80% good food and a little not so good food.  LOTS of exercise.

Lots of love.  Time goes by fast and it’s so hard to say goodbye.  I have lots of work ahead.  I’m readying a new program “BEFORE WELLNESS” for release next month.

Tomorrow

  1. Green juice and immunity shots
  2. Journal.
  3. Taking care of my work and my mom tomorrow.

Less Than Perfect

This morning I read this article on the need to do everything right and 100% healthy.  I thought a lot about this.  The thing is, it's a struggle.  For a lot of us, if we don't focus on getting it right, setting our goals, and taking action to make those goals happen,...

Inner Circle Personal Day After Spring Break

Inner Circle Personal Day After Spring Break

Clarity is everything.

Keeping track brings clarity.

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to step back.

While I had good intentions to share daily journals with my personal inner circle, it is too much.  I’m going to consolidate it here.

I’m grateful for:

  1. a 15 and 19-year-old who will spend spring break with their grandparents!
  2. soft lemurs
  3.  air boats
  4. my friends
  5. good books
  6. nice music
  7. sunshine
  8. water
  9. Amanda, so I can take a break and not worry
  10. my family

I haven’t been journaling here because I’ve had company.  We’ve been busy.  So busy that I slept well, drank lots of water, played pickle ball, went swimming, took bus tours, went to two zoos, took boat rides, played chess, played cards, and went for lots of walks.  Ate out twice a day.  I had a great week!  Now I have one week to get my digestion back on track, and then, I will be ready for more family on another continent.

Pictures coming soon.

My mom’s new doctor is amazing!  We are SO lucky to have found her.  She is talking about having her (88 and covid body sleepy) get a PT and start golfing again.  My mom is so excited she can hardly stand it.

Now I can tell you what happened with her old doctor, who she loved and trusted.  His office called and told her she had to be on the phone with them every other Friday for “Chronic Care.”  The doctors office said her Medicare would no longer cover her medical bills if she didn’t.  They repeated the same thing to me.  The next day we looked it up and called the office manager to let them know what the phone person said and that she would prefer not to participate.  (PAGE 34 of Medicare booklet).  The office manager wasn’t very nice but she did say that they shouldn’t be misrepresenting Medicare rules.  We received a letter with no legible signature a few weeks later and after another appointment.  They fired both of us as patients.  My mom was devastated; she really liked and trusted him.  She would have given up her card game and/or nap if it meant keeping her doctor.

Who kicks an 88-year-old patient to the curb and refuses to refill necessary prescriptions and sends a letter with (one year) backdated emergency care dates?  My brother wants to turn them in, but my mom still thinks the doctor doesn’t know and the office is acting without his knowledge.  That could be, but my feelings are he should control his office.

As it turns out, all for the best.  This new doctor is incredible.

VISION BOARD – Pictures coming soon of my mom on the tee-box!

Tomorrow

  1. Lemon in the morning.
  2. Journal.
  3. Get my work done so I can play with kids next week.
